Our mission is to make sure girls in the Los Angeles community receive quality financial literacy education before graduation so they can be empowered to make knowledgeable money decisions and have reduced stress. We are addressing this problem because girls are graduating from high school without the basic personal financial skills to make important decisions critical to their well-being and their ability to maintain happy, healthy and secure lives. Girls Build Credit: Financial Empowerment Initiative, is an official club at John F. Kennedy High School, comprised of fifteen girls from diverse backgrounds. All of our members are responsible for their own money, yet lack bank accounts and budgets to stay organized. Student loan debt is a national crisis which creates excessive stress and may increase the risk of high blood pressure, depression, anxiety, accelerated aging, and premature death. Since all young adults will be responsible for their own money eventually, teaching the fundamental life skill of financial literacy now will decrease the risk of future financial problems and the stress and the possible negative health issues associated with it.
